Welcome Services for New Families
Regardless of whether it is your first or your tenth time, the transition from one community to another can pose a variety of challenges for a military family or single military member. The Calgary Military Resource Centre (MFRC) offers a variety of services designed to help ease this transition, including:
- Welcome Packages: An information package is mailed to the military member before relocation to Calgary. It contains important information about the military presence in Calgary, the MFRC, helpful documents outlining community resources (including a list of doctor’s accepting new patients, school board contacts, and hospitals), and much more. Click here to request a Welcome Package. Our Welcome Package is also available online. Click here for information about Calgary.
- Welcome visits: Upon request, our Community Coordinator conducts Welcome Visits to personally welcome new families to Calgary. Our Coordinators will do their best to answer any questions you have about your new city, community resources and MFRC services. These visits are conducted during a time that is convenient for you, within the comfort of your new home, or at an alternate location if you would prefer. If you are new to Calgary or surrounding area's and would like to receive a Welcome Visit, click here to submit your request.
- Casual childcare: Unpacking and getting settled in is difficult in itself, and can be even more stressful (for both parents and kids) when there are children underfoot. Refer to our Child and Youth section for more information about our Casual Childcare options.
- Social gatherings for new families: Calgary is a large city with a relatively small military community. Having no PMQ patches, military families are widely dispersed throughout Calgary, and outside the city. This presents a challenge for new families who are eager to connect with other military families in Calgary. Our social gatherings are designed with this in mind. We hold a Welcome Event during posting season, and provide ongoing opportunities for social interaction throughout the year. Social gatherings are advertised in the Upcoming Events section of our website.
- Information briefing and orientation session:
Organized around the month of September, these briefings are an opportunity for new families to be officially welcomed, and provided with detailed information about their community.
